Buying the doors prehung is the easiest and quickest route. It is nice if they are pre-trimmed on one side but not necessary. Prehung means the doors are hung in the jambs at the factory with the hinges and stop already installed and basically ready to be set in the opening and installed.

As a professional trimmer I find that if the doors are pre-trimmed before installing, the job is easier and goes much faster. If you are new at it and never installed an interior door then I highly recommend it to be pre-trimmed. Sometimes they come pre-trimmed from the factory and sometimes they don't and if they are not I will carefully lay the door flat on the floor and pre-trim it myself. You would always pre-trim the side which would be going to the inside the room. Most of the time a door going into room will open into the room.

A simple way to figure out if you need a right hand opening door or a left hand opening door is to look where the light switch is. If the light switch is on the right then you would need a left hand swinging door and vice versa. Another way to explain it is if the hinges of the prehung door are on the left and it swings in to be walked through then it would be a left hand swing door and vice versa again.

After you have figured out the swing of the prehung doors that you need, you will also need to know the sizes to get. This is not too difficult to figure out. Most of the time, the rough opening of where you will be installing interior doors or door will be 2 inches wider then the size of the door. If you have a rough opening that measures 32 inches then this rough opening is framed for a 2/6 door. A 2/6 door in other words measures 30 inches. In new construction, most of the time a typical bedroom door is framed at 32 inches and is a 2/6 door. Again in new construction a bathroom door is commonly framed at 30 inches which would be a 2/4 door. Always measure the openings accurately to be sure as these are typical but not always the case. I have trimmed a lot of homes that were handicap accessible homes and all the doors were 3/0’s or 36 inches. In the case of 3/0 doors the openings were framed at 38 inches. A note here is to keep in mind the rough openings are never perfect and could be a touch over or under the correct measurements.

Now you have some choices to make. What kind of doors do you want? These interior doors come in many varieties. Some varieties include hollow core or solid core, six panel or flush panel, wood or man made materials. These are just some of the choices and the price does vary quite a bit.

I will have to admit that installing interior doors has always been an enjoyable part of finish carpentry for me. It gives you a sense of accomplishment and is not only rewarding but now you have the understanding of how a door works and can adjust any old door to work.
