Hand Tool Manufacturers

Who's Who in Hand Tool Manufacturers

There are many hand tool manufacturers throughout the country and the world. Today, many of them focus on power tools, such as drills and saws.

If you need the basics, you might want to invest in a complete set. It could be more cost effective in the long run. Here's a look at what you can get from some of the leading manufacturers.

Stanley Works

Stanley, Mac, Proto, Blick, Goldblatt, Zag, Precision Hardware and Bostitch are brands owned by Stanley Works. In recent years, they have acquired a number of companies, some as small as the 1000 employee Monarch Mirror Door Co. Others are major security companies. So, it is safe to say that the company will be around for years to come and your warranties will be honored.

Stanley is famous for hand planes, saws, chisels and screwdrivers. Power-lock tape measures, the Bailey plane and the Surform shaper are some of the company's well-known innovations. The company's utility knife is famous world-wide. In the UK, it is known simply as the Stanley knife.

Until the late 1980s, the Craftsman line of tools, which is sold in Sears, Kmart and Orchard Supply hardware stores, was manufactured by Stanley. Today, most of the Craftsman tools are made by the Danaher Corporation, not one of the best known hand tool manufacturers.

Lie-Nielsen Tool Works

Lie-Nielsen is not a mega-company like Stanley Works, but if you want woodworking tools that are based on traditional designs, they are one of the few companies that provide them. Some tools, such as the spoke-shave and the socket chisel, are not usually mass produced. So, they can be difficult to find. Lie-Nielsen might be the only company that still makes them.

Newell Rubbermaid

Newell Rubbermaid is one of the bigger hand tool manufacturers. The Vice-grip is actually one of their tools, although other companies have copied the design.

If you buy clamps, vices, planes, chisels or saw blades, with brand names like Irwin, Record or Marples, they were manufactured by Newell Rubbermaid. The company makes other tools, too, but those are their specialties.

Power Tools

Black and Decker, Makita, Ryobi and Milwaukee are some of the companies that specialize in power tools. Black and Decker owns a few other brands, including DeWalt, Delta and Porter-Cable.

If you plan to do a lot of little projects around the house, a few power tools will make things a lot easier for you. The electric drill is one example of a must-have for do-it-yourselfers.

You might have to buy from a couple of different tool manufacturers in order to get everything that you need. Now, you know who's who.
